Eduardo is from Mexico City but in search of better job opportunities he moved to Playa del Carmen, like so many others. Playa is the city of opportunities as it is the fastest growing city in the Central and South Americas. Eduardo is an electrician and plumber but he can do just about any job, a true DIY man. He works for himself, and as his business is successful, he has assistants. This is how I got to know Eduardo, as he has done some work for me.
The Aztecs and the Maya are not to be confused. They built two different civilisations. The Aztec empire was located mostly in central and southern Mexico, but it eventually stretched all the way from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. The Maya lived in Yucatán , Campeche, Chiapas, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras. Today the descendants of the Aztecs live mostly around Mexico City. You can recognise them immediately because they are taller than the Maya (who are short and stocky) and and their facial features are also slimmer. They often have a prominent hooked nose.
In the past, what really set the Maya apart was their scientific temperament. They studied stars and had come up with a very scientific calendar comparable to the modern one (which the Aztecs copied later). The Aztecs were a much younger civilisation and they were mainly warriors and huge believers of human sacrifice and were at it all the time. The Maya, on the other hand, believed in offering blood instead, though they were not averse to sacrificing the captain of a football team! The Aztecs were ruled by one supreme ruler who conquered everybody else while the Maya had independent city-kingdoms.
